Review: O.Henry`s short story, 'A Lickpenny Lover', teaches many valuable lessons. One of these lessons is to not judge someone. Masie profiled Irving as a rich young man who had a lot of money yet when he proposed she didn’t believe his love for her and turned him down. He wanted to give her the world and she doubted him. Another important lesson that can be taken from this story is money isn't everything. Masie left Irving because she thought he was too cheap and was going to take her to Coney Island for a wedding tour rather than a trip around the world. Instead of saying yes when Irving proposed because she truly loved him, Masie left him. Social classifications can make it difficult for people to have an honest relationship. Masie wanted a rich boyfriend, but interpreted Irving`s intentions in the wrong way. She thought him to be like most of the guys that asked her out, cheap! Another lesson that can be gotten from ‘A Lickpenny Lover’ is that preconceived notions are bad. Masie had an idea in her head and because of that she never really gave Irving a chance, before she ended their relationship. She lost out on the chance to have true love and a serious relationship. A few things I liked about this short story from O.Henry, is that it has an old feel to it. The story seems like it was written decades back, but still captures my attention and keeps me interested. The theme that money isn’t everything still applies today and the story is still relevant. I also liked how, even though Irving was higher up on the social scale, he was still brave enough to break from convention and asked Masie out, fell in love, and propose marriage.
